This morning I updated my 3DS to the new update. I was looking forward to the eShop, but am disappointed to realize the card of Wii points I had been waiting to use is useless on the 3DS, as they have changed to $ amounts and only use 3DS gift cards or credit/debit cards. I was also looking forward to the DSi transfer and moving my Oregon Trail over to my 3DS, but I have not got around to trying that function, yet.
I did check out the free downloads from the eShop. The 3D Classics: Excitebike game is an interesting 3D version of a classic game. It is not all that great of a game, but it is at least something to play in 3D while I still wait for something I actually want to buy (i.e. Mario Kart!!). Note this is only free until July 7, 2011.
The other free download is Pokedex 3D. This is not all that interesting without the AR codes to bring the Pokemon to life, although even if I printed out the AR codes I do not imagine it would offer that much of entertainment. Still the idea of collecting all the Pokemon through SpotPass sounds fun. Too bad it came out right after I got back from Disneyland, where I averaged at least 10 StreetPasses a day.
The eShop is also a good place to check out basic info on current and upcoming 3DS games, although you can easily get more info on the games from the Internet. Seeing screenshots on the two screens at the same time as they would when playing is nice, but it would be better if it actually had 3D screenshots for the top screen, as it is just 2D as there are in magazines.
The coolest thing is today they even added info on games shown at E3. This includes videos you can download. These are even in 3D, so better than online coverage. Now I really cannot wait for Mario Kart 3D!!!
