Kongregate Badge of the Day: Flak Jack

The Kongregate Badge of the Day for Tuesday, November 27, 2012 is the Flak Jack Badge. This is a Medium badge for the game Reactance. To get the badge you need to achieve at least a 21x multiplier.  For getting this Badge of the Day you get 17 Gamestop PowerUp Reward Points (32 if you are a KongPlus Member).

From when I originally got it:

"The multiplier goes up when you hit enemies, but it also goes down slowly when you are not hitting enemies.  Hit enemies fast in a row to rack the multiplier up.  It seems to work best on the asteroid levels.  I got the badge by using Lasers on Level 8 and I did not even beat the level.  I had the lasers upgraded to level 2 for everything, except I had defensive laser still at level 1.  My ship upgrades were Health Level 4, Regen Level 3, Speed Level 4, Ally Level 1, and Shield Level 2.  I am sure different builds can do it, but this is what worked for me."

As always if you already have the badge, just go to the game and you will be awarded the extra points.

Wii U: NintendoLand - Captain Falcon's Twister Race Thrills, Twists, and Turns

Wii U: NintendoLand - Captain Falcon's Twister Race Thrills, Twists, and TurnsCaptain Falcon's Twister Race Thrills, Twists, and Turns is a racing mini game.  You turn the Gamepad side to die to control your racer through the courses.  Mostly, you look at the Gamepad screen, but when you go through tunnels only the TV screen shows you and the boosts.
Wii U: NintendoLand - Captain Falcon's Twister Race Thrills, Twists, and Turns

I have always loved racing, so this game was instantly one of my favorite parts of NintendoLand.  I guess I am also pretty decent at racing games, as the first time I tried it I beat all 12 areas and got a star for this mini game.  Of course, I can still do better, since I did only get a silver trophy.

Wii U: NintendoLand - Takamaru's Ninja Castle Throwing-Star Game

Wii U: NintendoLand - Takamaru's Ninja Castle Throwing-Star GameIn the Takamaru's Ninja Castle Throwing-Star Game part of NintendoLand you throw stars from the Gamepad to targets on the TV screen.  Overall it is peretty simple to play, but it does start to get hard as more ninjas come and some throw things at you.  I found it a good challenge, though.  However, the bossa t about Stage 5 was kind of annoying because it took forever to wittle it down and it is not exactly clear what exactly you were supposed to be hitting.

Wii U: NintendoLand - Donkey Kong Crash Course Full-Tilt Obstacle Course

Wii U: NintendoLand - Donkey Kong Crash Course Full-Tilt Obstacle CourseDonkey Kong Crash Course Full-Tilt Obstacle Course has you tilt the Gamepad and use the different buttons and joysticks depending on the obstacles.  At first it is pretty simple, but I still cannot get past the part where you have to spin the right joystick to turn the path with you on it.  Thus, it is quickly challenging, but I hear 9 is the worst part.  I still find it kind of addicting and fun to try to do, though.

Wii U: NintendoLand - Metroid Blast Deep-Space Shootout

Wii U: NintendoLand - Metroid Blast Deep-Space ShootoutMetroid Blast Deep-Space Shootout is not the kind of game I expected to like, but I was kind of surprised at how complicated I found it.  Yeah, I am one for simple controls and the whole having to use two joysticks moving the Gamepad and also use L and R buttons is just too much to try and get coordinated with.  I actually surprised myself in being able to beat the first level in the assault mission (only mode I could play on my own) on just my second try.

Wii U: NintendoLand - Metroid Blast Deep-Space Shootout
Overall this part of the NintendoLand game is just not for me, but I do like that it kind of gives you a warning it is for experts and I can appreciate that it provides the game with more variety and complexity to appeal to a wider range of gamers.  Also, I think it might not be so bad if I just got around to syncing a Wii Remote and tried playing it that way.

Wii U: Hulu Plus

Hulu Plus on Wii U
When I went to Miiverse to check out the NintendoLand community a little while ago, I noticed there was now a Hulu Plus community.  After about 15 minutes of trying to find out how to update the software and clicking on Hulu Plus several times it finally started an update that made the app active.  Still not Nintendo TVii, but nice to see more options available.

However, I do not like how it has the episodes and content to select only showing on the TV.  Sure, it is kind of nice to see something different and the info about what you are currently highlighted over on the Gamepad, but I would prefer to have it so you can choose which way you want it to be shown.  You can at least switch from TV to Gamepad when watching the stuff, so you can watch on the Gamepad or the TV.

Wii U: NintendoLand - Octopus Dance Undersea Party Grooves

Wii U: NintendoLand - Octopus Dance Undersea Party GroovesOctopus Dance Undersea Party Grooves is a rhythm game.  Playing on the Gamepad you use the two joysticks to control the Miis arms to match what the guy does in 1, 2, 3 counts.  In the first few stages it just using the joysticks, but later it also involves jumping by shaking the Gamepad and tilting side to side for different positions.

Although, I sort of stunk at this game at first, I still found it somewhat addicting from the start.  After awhile I got better at it, although I still have barely able to get past stage 3 once.  I hear there are only 5 stages total, though, so I guess not that much more to work towards.

Wii U: NintendoLand - Pikmin Adventure Tame the Wilderness

Wii U: NintendoLand - Pikmin Adventure Tame the WildernessThe Pikmin Adventure Tame the Wilderness part of NintendoLand plays much like a action adventure level style game.  I found the first 6 levels of challenge mode very easy to play.  It is interesting how it has different types of levels like timed, challenge, and boss.  However, the 7th level is a timed one that is got quickly very frustrating for me, as it seems to run out of time very quickly with few opportunities to collect extra time before it runs out.  Then again I am not that great at these types of games and do not like them that much to grind and master them anyways.  However, it does seem like it might be more fun if played with a friend, although the versus mode is probably not for me since pretty much anyone could very easily beat me.

Wii U: NintendoLand - Yoshi's Fruit Cart On the Snack Trail

Wii U: NintendoLand - Yoshi's Fruit Cart On the Snack TrailIn the Yoshi's Fruit Cart On the Snack Trail part of NintendoLand you try to collect all the fruit and get to the goal.  The concept sounds easy, but the actual execution can be tricky.  The fruit and obstacles appear only on the screen and you have to draw the path on the Gamepad.  There are different landmark things like clouds and proximity to other fruit or the door that can help you draw the path successfully.

Wii U: NintendoLand - Yoshi's Fruit Cart On the Snack Trail

As you progress further there are more challenges, such as having to pick up certain fruit in numbered order.  If you fail to pick up the fruit in order or have all the fruit when you reach the door, you lose a life and have to start over.  If you still have lives, you only have to go after the fruit you did not pick up already when you retry the level.

Overall I like the Yoshi's Fruit Cart On the Snack Trail mini game.  It certainly takes some strategy and thinking that I did not expect from NintendoLand, but really appreciate because I do tend to prefer puzzle and strategy type games.

Wii U: Video Content Disappointment

Wii U: Video ContentClearly, I have not paid much attention to the preview or Wii U release news since the announcement back in September because I had no idea that I would not be able to enjoy Nintendo TVii, Hulu Plus, or Amazon Instant Video until some later update.  I am quite disappointed because the Nintendo TVii feature was the thing I was most excited about checking out.  I know it is a video game system and yeah I did get it more for gaming, but I really was interested in being able to watch the other stuff on my TV using the Wii U since Nintendo consoles are the only systems I own and only thing I hook up to my TV besides my DirecTV box.  What is more annoying is it has the icons on the Gamepad screen for the different video services and only Netflix is actually available right now.  At least the Nintendo TVii part does say it is coming in December, though.

Wii U: Setting Up My Mii

I choose to set up my Mii by sending it from my 3DS.  You can also make one, have a look alike made, or scan a QR code (check out the list of them I had made for when the 3DS came out here).  I liked I could easily use the same one, although I had to go through the process twice because I forgot I had for some reason turned copying off on my Mii, so I had to turn copying on and try again.

Wii U: Unboxing and Initial Set Up

This morning my pre-ordered expedited shipping Wii U from Target finally came.  I just finished setting it up and am now waiting for the update to finish, which I hear can take a while, so I figured I might as well share my unboxing and initial set up photos now.

TV Remote screen on Wii U Gamepad.  I absolutely love it because I can control my TV and my DirecTV box with it.  I had set up my DirecTV remote to most of this, but it was really frustrating I could not change TV input with it.  It would seem how hard is it to walk to the TV and change input, but I kind of tend to stack junk around the side of the dresser my TV is on making it hard to access the input buttons.  Now I can easily switch between TV and Wii inputs with the Gamepad.
Wii U: Unboxing and Initial Set Up

Checking for update after I set up the Internet, which was done by taking the Gamepad upstairs where I keep the WiFi password.  The Gamepad lost connection with the Wii U when I did this, but I found if I stood in the bedroom above mine instead of the office I was close enough to input the password.  Nice to not have to bring password down and then take it back up, although I kind of expected better distance for it to stay connected, as it would seem if I put the Wii U in my Great Room and tried to control it to watch video stuff on the Wii U while playing Guild Wars 2 on the PC in the study it may end up being too far away to stay connected, as it disconnected when I was by my brother's room, which is about same distance measurement as that scenario.

Downloading the update, which has now gotten to be about halfway done while I did this post (~20 to 30 minutes)
